Confused hi im Paula. 66yrs young.diagnosis 7 yrs ago with R.A started on sulfasalazine for 6yrs,but taken off due to severe skin rash.was put onto mxt but taken off after 5wks ,again due to infections.nurse suggest to start on leflunomide in 2 wks time.i`m a little apprehensive.anyone out there with good or bad experience please.

Hi Paula

A very warm welcome to the forum BigGrin , glad you have found us ! As we are all in the same boat you will get much support and advice it is a lifeline for many of us.

I started on leflunomide about a year ago, at first I did suffer with some very severe headaches, flannel on the head etc but they did eventually go away, other than that nothing really. Unfortunately it has not brought the RA under control, although I feel it has helped, I also take hydroxychloroquinne and few other bits. I have now added infliximab and hopefully will be sorted !

Hi Paula,

Welcome to the forum! You'll get lots of support and advice on here.
I am 61 and have had RA for 10 years. I have tried Leflunamide, on it's own and with mtx, but unfortunately it did nothing for my RA. We are all different though and I know a lot of people find it very effective.
I am now on mtx and humira.
Looking forward to getting to know you.

Hi Paula, and welcome to the forum. I was dx in Jan 2006, and my first drug was sulfasalazine too. Somewhere further down the line I was put on leflunomide, but taken off it pretty quickly after it played havoc with my liver.

It may well work for you - everyone is different.

Hi Paula

Welcome to the forum. A great place to be for support and information; lots of folk, lots of knowledge and a wealth of tried and tested experiences!

I'm Lyn; I was diagnosed with sero-negative RA 22+ years ago and have since run the gamut of medication and had several surgical procedures along the way. Struggling at the moment after knee surgery last summer, two lots of knee aspirations and joint injections in 7 weeks and a further referral to Orthopaedics. But heyho...

I had Leflunomide several years ago alongside prednisolone but it didn't have any affect on the RA and after 10 months I was taken off it. Currently on Enbrel, Leflunomide, Prednisolone and Naproxen, Amitriptyline and a jolly assortment of pain killers! After 6 weeks the Leflunomide doesn't seem to be working and I'm now considerably worse ... at this rate I shall be asking to go back on the methotrexate!! RollEyes

All that said is not to say that Leflunomide won't be the drug for you. RA responds differently in each one of us as do the drugs that are given to treat it, as you will realise after a couple of failures. This makes it difficult for those who treat us and for us who live with it. Stay positive though and be sure if Leflunomide isn't for you there's still a wealth of other options available.

Hi Paula - I actually found the leflunomide to be very effective whereas MTX and hydroxy did nothing on their own. MTX an leflunomide together was a great combination for me and my inflammatory markers really came down. But .... it increased my blood pressure and gave me some really bad headaches. Hope it works for you Paula - I know it can be very effective so fingers crossed for you XX Ailsa
